My mantra—“Taste is the True Test” It applies when I select wines to offer to you, my customer, and to you when you purchase wine from me. While we cannot offer you a taste of any wine you choose to buy, we do offer you many opportunities to taste wines, many that you will not find elsewhere. I have been enjoying wine for nearly sixty years and my passion continues unabated. It motivates every member of the Madison Wine Shop team. I rarely buy wine that I have not tasted and I never pass up the opportunity to taste wine of any description. I travel extensively in search of Rick’s Picks.
I do not judge wine by vintages, varietal, appellations, label or reviewers' numeric ratings, and experience has taught me that price is not a good indicator of quality. None of these criteria can substitute for my palate. With time, wine changes for better or worse—slowly in an unopened bottle and quite quickly once exposed to oxygen in the air. I frequently evaluate a wine over a period of days to try to judge whether it offers pleasure now, may offer pleasure at some time in the future, or not at all. I use the word 'try' because we are talking about a subjective, qualitative judgment. Rick’s Picks are wines selected by me for quality and value. They are what have made the Madison Wine Shop a Wine Lover’s Mecca for twenty years. You will find Rick’s Picks on our shelves, in the Wine Editorial, our newsletter, in our email eWineBulletin, and at our Tasting Counter. Rick Lewis |
