Why has Wine Tasting been a top priority at the Madison Wine Shop? Simply because words, written or spoken, cannot, except in very general terms, adequately describe the taste of wine. Could I verbally describe a piece of music such that you would recognize it the first time you heard it? Sound assaults our hearing whether we like it or not, but to comprehend we have to learn to listen.
With taste we first need to learn to taste and only then can we begin to comprehend what we are tasting and acquire a common language to describe it. My observations, over many years, have lead me to the conclusion that the inability to taste and to communicate what we taste, coupled with intimidation, but certainly not price, are some of the obstacles to everyday enjoyment of wine. The prospect of picking a wine based solely on its label, on a review, or on someone’s sales-pitch, then taking it home and finding that it is not what you expected—or worse, that you do not like it—is another deterrent to being adventurous. Come to our tastings frequently. Our tastings aim to educate over time, by providing an opportunity to sample and discuss a wide variety of wines, mostly outside of the mainstream, mostly affordable and sometimes not. We usually do not select the wines and the theme (if there is one) until the day before. We discourage your picking and choosing wines to taste based on labels, varietals, or personal prejudice, and we urge you to taste all the wines in our preordained order. It's free, informal, informative, face-to-face with me and your fellow participants and its fun. What is more it provides me with invaluable feed-back. I estimate that in twenty years I have observed roughly 1 million wine samplings. Simply show up between 12 noon and 7:30 pm any or every Saturday, and most other days too.
